Zack Snyder to direct Superman

I know this is old news, but I have actually been busy with stuff. I still want to write about it, so here goes.

Before I start this properly, I would like to state that I like Zack Snyder. He seems like a nice guy, and has made three films that I have enjoyed; Dawn of the Dead (2004), 300 (2006) and Watchmen (2009). However, I don’t think he is the right choice to do Superman. Of course, I am among the least informed when it comes to this, as I’m not actually involved, but Chris and Jonah Nolan generally make dark, “gritty” movies. Zack Snyder makes very comic-bookish movies. I read something the other day that claimed the reason behind Superman Returns‘ failure to be the fact that it did not adapt to a post-9/11 world. I don’t think this reboot will have the same problem, but I can’t imagine a Nolan-esque film directed by someone with such a brash and bold style as Zack Snyder’s. Nolan’s films are all about restraint and subtle awesomeness, whereas Snyder goes all-out balls-out to get everything up front. I like both styles, and they can both work equally well for different things. BUT I don’t see Nolan’s writing and Snyder’s direction forging a good working relationship.

However, Snyder is a talented guy. He knows what he is doing, and I hope he proves me wrong. I am one of the few who didn’t outright hate Superman Returns, but I would be lying to say it wasn’t a disappointment. If anyone can make/oversee a great Superman film, it’s Chris Nolan. Zack Snyder can hang around and try to help, but if I was on a film set with Chris Nolan, I’d defer to that motherfucker, all day long.
